Academic Research and Writing Program

The mission of the Academic Research and Writing Program is to empower all students to operate proficiently within the university and beyond by enhancing their competencies in critical thinking and reading, academic writing, and information literacy. Faculty in the Program convey to students that the ability to write effectively within the academic community is empowering, that it is based upon reading, thinking and due process, and that it requires both perseverance and discipline. The Program seeks to provide students with strategies so that they can engage with and negotiate contemporary debate effectively and thoughtfully. Towards achieving this, the Program presents and practices techniques for reading critically and for evaluating sources incisively while fostering in students a sense of responsibility in the use and presentation of their academic research. Students are required to produce a variety of academic papers in order to enhance their ability to write effectively and insightfully across a range of academic contexts in accordance with accepted academic standards and expectations and to do so with increasing success and self-confidence.

The Program consists of two courses:

ENG 115 Principles of Academic Writing (3 CREDITS).

ENG 215 Principles of Academic Research (4 CREDITS).

Students must pass ENG 115 with a minimum grade of C- to progress to ENG 215. (Students wishing to take ENG 215 as a summer course must achieve a minimum grade of B- for ENG 115.)

Note: New students eligible to take ENG 115 have four consecutive semesters from their semester of entry to pass both ENG 115 and ENG 215. New students eligible to take ENG 215 have two consecutive semesters from their first semester of eligibility to pass this course. Students who do not complete these courses within the required time frame will normally be dismissed from the university.

Study Abroad - International Internship

As a Junior at Eureka College in Illinois, Amanda sought an opportunity to come to London to study. She fell in love with Richmond's academic program and location and secured an internship with Cameron PR in Covent Garden. The opportunity to experience the West End Theatre scene was very important for her as she was leaning towards drama as a major.
