Department of Arts & Sciences

The Department offers an excellent range of core courses and degree requirements taught by highly-qualified faculty engaged in a variety of scholarship and professional activities.

Our Bachelor of Arts Degree Program leads to a BA Art, Design and Media, and our Bachelor of Science Degree Program leads to a BS Computer Engineering. In addition, we offer a successful joint program in Engineering with George Washington University, USA.

These programs provide a balanced theoretical and practical approach to the study of creative and technical subjects and are designed to provide a combination of academic depth and breadth. The curriculum emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills applied to the analysis and design of real-world problems. Students are offered several "expressive" ADM core courses and several mathematics courses that are relevant to the study of computing.

Richmond offers typical introductory college level courses in the pure sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In addition to this Richmond offers a variety of other Core Curriculum science courses that reflect the University’s mission statement. In many cases the courses are specifically structured to reflect the University’s international/intercultural identity and include courses in Ecology, The History of Biology, Human Biology and three areas within Environmental Studies.

As part of a liberal arts environment, academic ties are strong with other departments and programs, including Communications, Economics and Psychology. Increasingly, the acquisition of inter-disciplinary skills is becoming an important component of education and is crucial in today’s computing and IT workplace.

Small class sizes provide an ideal learning environment, something of considerable importance in many computing courses. The student body is diverse and students come from many countries across the globe, with male and female students equally represented in all of the Department's programs.

The Department’s graduates have impressive track records. Many move on to careers in the electronics, manufacturing, technology, scientific and services industries, both in the private and public sector. Their academic achievements also allow them to continue successfully in post-graduate studies at excellent institutions, including the Royal College of Art, University of Oxford and the London School of Economics.
