Richmond MBA

History of the Richmond MBA program

In 1990 Richmond opened a unique international MBA program, designed to reflect the global emphasis of Richmond’s mission. Students from fifty countries enrolled in the first 11 years of the program. The program, like the rest of the University, was accredited in the US by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Initially Richmond’s MBA was a two year program incorporating a business internship in London.
The program began using the approach of case study and management skills development and was driven by the philosophy of learning through experience. The use of continuous assessments for course work, group projects and written assignments, reflected the American approach to educational assessment.

Multicultural team work, applying skills in problem analysis, making decisions in business situations and learning to assess oneself and to motivate others were important themes to the MBA education at Richmond.

The program developed in both enrolment and philosophy, and placed a priority on the acquisition of skills in all the functional area of management and leadership in a multi-cultural setting. A new curriculum for the program was developed in 1995 which incorporated a First Year Foundation course, followed by either a General Management Option or an International Marketing Option, or an International Finance Option.

By the late 1990s, Richmond developed a new one-year structure that provided an integrative approach to studying management in a global context. The emphasis was placed on an integrative view of business practices and a focus on information technology, as well as developing the leadership skills required to manage knowledge-based companies of the future. The 45 credit program provided a rigorous one year option. In 2001 the MBA program was suspended for re-evaluation and development.

More than 350 of our MBA successfully completed the requirements and graduated successfully. They are working in over 50 countries worldwide. Their skills and the MBA alumni network continue to exist and develop.
