Ms Julia Hathaway

Julia Hathaway has a BA in History from Sussex University, a PGCE in EFL/ESL from London University and a MA in Applied Linguistics from Durham University. She has worked with international students all her professional life and she has extensive experience of working and living in different cultures. This experience includes: teaching in a multicultural community in London, three years in Morocco doing teacher training, materials development and teaching, three years in Mallorca, Spain working for the British Council and the University of the Balearics, two years as a ‘foreign expert’ in universities in China with the British Council and teaching EAP at London university. She joined Richmond in 1995.

At Richmond she has been director of the International Field Study Project, a unique intercultural learning experience where students study then visit a country to carry out primary field research. Past IFSPs include Morocco and China.

She is also faculty sponsor of the university Amnesty International club. This is a very lively club. Members join the activities of other London Universities and attend events and conferences all over the country.

Her teaching at Richmond and research is united by the themes of language, culture and identity.
