London as a Global City
A Lecture by Professor John Eade

On Tuesday evening 24 November, President Ian Newbould welcomed guests, faculty and staff to Richmond University to participate in the second lecture in the Global Transformations series delivered by Professor John Eade, recently appointed Academic Governor of Richmond and Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Roehampton. Professor Eade is also the Executive Director of CRONEM, a multidisciplinary research centre in the field of nationalism, ethnicity and multiculturalism.

For the last 30 years Professor Eade has undertaken research on global migration across London, particularly in the East End, initially focusing on the settlement of those from Bangladesh in Tower Hamlets. More recently working with colleagues from CRONEM he has been involved in projects funded by research councils and major charitable bodies, which have looked at other migrants and their contribution to an increasingly diverse, globalizing city.

In his lecture Professor Eade reflected on what these projects tell us about London as a global city and discussed what he has learned through being involved in developing a centre which operates between the university and the ‘real world’. The lecture, which spoke directly to Richmond’s Mission of University in Diversity, generated lively discussion from the audience, which included Trustees and Academic Governors, members of The Richmond Society, faculty, staff and friends of Richmond.
